Wednesday 30 April 2014

Homework:

(Both grade 4s and 5s): Write a blog post about today's salmon release field trip.

Reminder: It's a pro-D day this Friday so there will be no school for students.

As it is our longtime secretary, Lisa Gregson's last day of work tomorrow before moving on to a new job with the North Vancouver School District, the students are asked to each bring in a flower to present to Mrs. Gregson tomorrow afternoon as a farewell gift.

We had beautiful weather today for our field trip to release the salmon that we've been raising in our classroom for the past several months.

Homework:

Math (grade 4s): p. 215 #7-9 (M)
         (grade 5s): p. 228 #1-3, 5, 7-9 (M)

We were lucky to have beautiful, sunny weather for our panorama photo of all the Brooksbank students and teachers.
In Science we did an interesting experiment today which mimicked how salmon might find their own "home" stream by smell alone. Students were grouped into 6 groups, originally simply named A, B, C, D, E, F.
They were blindfolded, allowed to memorize the smell of "their" home stream (which was a paper cup with a cotton ball infused with a particular scent), then they had to make their way across the ocean (the carpet) and find that same scent by smell alone.

As you can see from the chart below the mystery scents were vanilla, soya sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ginger, garlic, and lemon juice.

Students whose scent was vanilla, soya, Worcester had a slightly higher success rate than the students whose scent was ginger, garlic, or lemon.

In case students didn't get the data copied down, I'll post it below, but first a video:

As part of their training, UBC Nursing students came into the classroom to teach the students about healthy lifestyles.

We then had a great end to the day with an easter egg hunt, which the students loved!

Happy Easter!

Just a reminder, tomorrow is Band Demo Day for the grade 4s. Long and McQuade Musical Instruments will be at Brooksbank with a selection of different instruments for the students to try.

Thank you to those who have sent in their Salmon Release permission slips and who have offered their services as drivers. We continue to need drivers, so if you are able to avail yourself for that day, it would be most helpful. For those who haven't yet sent the forms in, please do so as soon as possible.
